Today I am going to be talking about the different ways blood sugar in type 1 diabetes can be affected by the heat.
The heat can have a dramatic effect on your blood sugar so it is incredibly important to keep a close eye on your blood sugar during the warm weather.
Your blood sugar can go high during the hot weather due to dehydration causing your blood sugar to become more concentrated as the blood flows through your kidneys decreases. to combat this you are advised to drink plenty of water.
Having a low blood sugar can be caused as the heat causes your blood vessels to expand meaning your insulin is absorbed a lot faster. The likelihood of hypos is also increased when exercising and people generally being more active during the nice weather (even just walking around the shops) as you are increasing your blood flow causing insulin to be absorbed fast especially if you chose to inject into your leg.
I blog post that I found incredibly useful when reaching this topic was BeyondType1’s post, I highly recommend you check it out! : https://beyondtype1.org/heat-and-type-1-diabetes/
